About the Poodle

Poodles come in three size varieties: Standards are more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder; Miniatures are 15 inches or under; Toys stand no more than 10 inches. That's it. In this country there are no medium poodles, Klein, Moyen, Royal, or Tiny Toy. Since AKC doesn't use these terms they are often considered to be marketing tools used to trick buyers into thinking they're getting something unique. Although I'm not opposed to using terms other than what AKC approves in order to understand one another better, I do not use them myself. Most reputable breeders won't use them either. Buyer Beware.

All three sizes have the same build and proportions. At dog shows, Poodles are usually seen in the elaborate Continental Clip which leads many people to think they're foo foo dogs. They're not. This clip began with the practical and necessary purpose of protecting the poodles joints and organs when he/she is carrying out their intended purpose of water retrieval. Additionally the wet hair can add a lot of weight and weigh the dog down, so the shaved areas are for the purpose of taking some of that weight off and making the dogs job safer. Over the years the functional haircut has become a fashion statement.  Most pet owners prefer the simpler Sporting Clip, in which the coat is shorn to follow the outline of the squarely built, smoothly muscled body. Poodles do need frequent grooming in order to stay healthy and comfortable. I clean ears and cut nails weekly, and bathe, shave face, feet, tail and cut body hair every 3 weeks at least.

Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. The Standard, with his greater size and strength, is the best all-around athlete of the family, but all Poodles can be trained with great success. Our Poodles enjoy a variety of performance sports.
